Priority definitions

Priority can be deduced using a combination of Urgency and Impact. For reference, the definitions of these terms are as follows:

Impact:a measure of the business criticality of an Incident, often equal to the extent to which an incident leads to degradation of agreed service levels. Impact is often measured by the number of people or systems affected.

Urgency:the necessary speed of solving an incident of a certain impact. A high-impact incident does not, by default, have to be solved immediately.

Priority:is expected effort. This is denoted by a number value, and is determined through assessing a combination of impact and urgency.

The matrix below describes the framework for determining priority.

Service Description

CUIT provides Internet and Internet2 connectivity for the University, actively researches the latest network technology and participates in national and regional organizations including Internet2 and NYSERNet.

Details

CUIT maintains Columbia's commodity Internet connections, which include:

1 Gbps connection via Level 3
5 Gbps connection via Cogent
100 Mbps connection via RCN (for RCN residential cable modem customers)

Columbia's research and education network connections include:

NYSERNet NYC and statewide regional optical network ("dark fiber")
270 Mbps connection to NYSERNet's IP network and from there to Internet2 and National Lambda Rail (NLR) packet net
1 Gbps connection to the US Large Hadron Collider Network (USLHCNET) providing connectivity to CERN
Potential for much higher bandwidth and advanced networking connectivity as needed for specific research needs such as dedicated "waves" or "lambdas" and international dynamic circuit networks

Connectivity to the commodity Internet and US national Internet2 research & education network.
