Service Description
Details
CUIT provides tools to create and manage email distribution lists of from a few to thousands of members. Membership in these lists can be managed by the list owner, a one or more list managers, or in an automated fashion for official University communications. For more information, see http://cuit.columbia.edu/mailing-lists
Standard Service Features
Messages are sent by email to the list address, and they are automatically re-sent to all the list members. Each list has one or more owners who can manage the list.
Simple lists pass along any mail received. The only list management feature is to add and remove members. Useful for contact addresses where it is intended that anyone in the world can send mail. Also useful for lists with only a few members if controlling sending is not a concern.
Managed lists use the Mailman software. Owners have a large set of list management features, accessed through web pages. For example, sending to the list can be limited to members (for discussion lists) or to a few people (one-way announcement lists) or can be moderated (owners determine which messages should be sent out).
Legacy lists use the Listserv software, which has features similar to Mailman, but which is managed by commands sent through email.
Service Eligibility
Students, Faculty, Staff, including casuals and consultants affiliated with departments, offices, research projects and other official efforts, and recognized student organizations, are eligible to own mailing lists. A UNI is required to own a Simple list though any valid internet address can be a recipient. Mailman lists require at least one Columbia UNI as an owner though any valid internet address can be a list member.
Prerequisites
Columbia UNI/email account for initial creation of any list.
